VR Around the World

Imagine living your life strapped to a motorized wheelchair. It would be difficult to explore the world around you because you wouldn’t be able to do many activities such as climbing to the top Machu Picchu, let alone a rock wall nearby.

Statistics have shown that Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zeland are best at being wheelchair accessible for travel. Within those countries, The United States has the top five cities for wheelchair living including Seattle, Portland, Reno, Albuquerque and Denver. Furthermore, there are three best vacations destinations for wheelchair users in the U.S. such as The Skydeck in Chicago, Silverstrand State Beach in California and The National Sports Center for the disabled in Colorado. It doesn’t seem like there are a lot of places that are wheelchair friendly, right?

Also, take into consideration the amount of travel time. The amount of time spent getting in, sitting in, and getting out of airplanes, cars, or public transportation adds up and can take away time from your vacation- a vacation that is limited to only a few places around the world, most of which are in America. What we need is something that can cut travel time but also take us to the inaccessible places for those who are in wheelchairs, which indeed are many and limitless. Something that would allow those in wheelchairs to stay comfortable in their familiar, respective environments and keep their everyday routine, while also helping those assisting them during their travels.

Since technology has evolved in leaps and bounds in the recent years, new forms such as virtual reality have emerged. Samsung has created Samsung Gear VR, powered by Oculus, which has introduced a new world, or dimension of reality simply by using your Samsung smartphone. The wheelchair users can experience what it would be like traveling to Machu Picchu, or any place for that matter, without being in their wheelchairs.

In turn, they can live a life without limits in the comfort of their own surroundings, making it easier to travel without the amount of travel time and costs only to find out that the place you’ve been wanting to go your entire life can’t accommodate you. That being said, Samsung Gear VR can accommodate you and take you all around the world, regardless if you are in a wheelchair and there are no ramps for you to use.
